Portuguese Square and Settlement Photos and Images
The Portuguese Square is located within the Portuguese Settlement in Ujong Pasir, about 20 minutes away from Melaka town. This area is home to the Kristang, a people borne from the blend of the original Portuguese colonists in Malacca intermarrying with local ethnic groups over several generations. The main attraction of this place is not so much the dance performances or cultural experience of the Portuguese, but rather the culinary adventures offered by the many restaurants in the square. The Portuguese residents were historically a traditional fishing village, and while they still fish, have now been swept in the tourist boom of Malacca, lending their skills to cooking seafood for locals and tourists.

To get there, visitors need to follow the signboards to Ujong Pasir and the turn-off into the settlement is marked by a large arch along the main road. As the arch is not brightly lit and the buildings along the side of the road can obscure its view, drive slowly so that you don't miss it. A short drive through the housing area will bring you the square, which is occupied by open-air restaurants and a few pubs. In front of the square is a large courtyard facing the sea; a good place to catch the sea breeze after a hearty meal. On weekends, the square is packed with diners but dance and cultural performances are held here from time to time in view of the fluctuating tourist seasons.
