The night market on Joker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat, also referred to as Chinatown Melaka) takes place on Fridays and weekends, from the early evening till midnight, sometimes later. Known traditionally as 'Pasar Malam', this is a cultural shopping feature prominent throughout Malaysia. Most pasar malams are held in areas within or near residential areas for locals, but some, like the Chinatowns in various states including Malacca, are catered more for tourists. In the night market on Jonker Walk, traders (mostly Chinese) will set up stalls and bright lights, retailing a colourful range of items and services with a tourist-based slant, including local and exotic food.
Visitors can observe a diverse range of local products sold such as souvenirs, handicrafts, household items, electronics, toys, gadgets, clothing, jewelry, fashion apparel and much more. Because this is a tourist haunt, you can also find fortune tellers, buskers, dance performances and even the occasional snake charmer. Bargaining, like in any other Malaysian market, is encouraged. During the night market hours, many people also make it a point to enjoy the nightlife scenery. In the middle of Jonker Street where the road splits into a T-junction, a collection of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants can be found that provide live music, beer and al-fresco dining on the streets. |
