Jonker Walk is a food, shopping and heritage area that lies along the street of Jalan Hang Jebat. It is also known as Melaka Chinatown, being distinctly Chinese in culture and appearance, while the businesses and shops are also mostly run by local Chinese traders. This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Malacca, which is especially true for visitors from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The entire street is lined with rows of heritage shops, most of colonial design that date back to the 17th Century. Antiques, souvenirs and handicrafts feature predominantly among the stuff you can buy here, including ceramics, porcelain, wooden carvings, glass, jewelry and brass products.
Traditional Chinese clothing, or fashion apparel inspired from the local Baba Nyonya culture, are also some of the shopping favourites of visitors to Jonker Walk. Popular Malacca food such as cendol, chicken rice balls and satay celup are available through the many restaurants that are concentrated mostly at the start of the walk. On Fridays and weekends, a night market takes place which colours the narrow street with bright lights and din of traders haggling with customers. Meanwhile, the middle of the walk is where the nightlife is most vibrant, with live music from long established pubs and cafes spilling out into the streets, along with tables, chairs and diners. |
